v4.0: the Argument Edition and the control overlay
v4.0 is the canonical full edition (598 pages). It ships with the Argument Edition (178 pages), brief v4.0 (24 pages) and essay v1.5, unchanged. No red-line box, rating or threshold changed. Each change is recorded in Appendix J.
Two books from one source
The Argument Edition is the case in one sitting. Its shared chapters are the full edition’s text in a new order; its ten condensed sections are each checked against their sources in the full edition, and its references into the full edition carry a dagger and link to it. The editions now read as a ladder: the Abstract, the One-Page Summary, the Brief, the Argument Edition and the Record, the full edition. Every claim and fact in a shorter rung is in the full edition.
What changed in the argument
- Control. A Control Overlay sits beside the Principal Map. House share, prover concentration, Layer 0 dependency groups and the corridor read through it, so capacity under one controller, creditor or jurisdiction counts once.
- Refund safety. Layer 5 states the unit in which value is counted and the chain- and user-liveness assumptions behind the bound. Its overall reading, on which the Phase I gate and Red Line 2’s overall condition are read, is the user-outcome series: offline clients counted, value lost published.
- Owning the toll, and the taking. The objections answer why a holder should not simply own a durable toll instead. The macro playbook says why repression’s quieter instruments work best when holders are legible and takings are not.
- Who collects first. Pledgeability, the holder-side flow and denomination each say who collects the benefit first.
- The response protocol reclassifies the asset as speculative or experimental only on a red line that kills; on a line that weakens, the claim is restated without the leg it removes.
Brief and summary
Brief v4.0 replaces v3.5. Its red lines now state each box’s condition, threshold and persistence window in full, which is why it runs to 24 pages. The one-page summary is restated to match.
Reproducibility
The checksum files record the LaTeX source commit each PDF was built from.
