The Unspanned State

essay v1.3

The Unspanned State

Gold works when the network does not. Bitcoin works when the state does not. Nothing works when the state functions perfectly and has simply decided that some transactions will not clear—when the courts sit, the lights stay on, the payments system runs, and the guarantees are honoured selectively, at a price set by someone else. That state is not a tail. It is the most probable configuration of the next decade, and there is no instrument for it.

It has a name in the record this essay condenses: administrative repression under intact infrastructure. Nothing is abolished; everything is scheduled. The custodian still honours withdrawals, for accounts that qualify. The platform still carries speech, within terms it revises. The court still enforces the indemnity, against defendants it can reach. The hardware vendor still keeps the device usable, on firmware it controls. Exit is still open, for those who clear. Every soft guarantee remains technically in force and practically conditional, and the conditions are not yours to set.

This essay is not a prediction that the state arrives. It is the instrument panel for reading whether it has—and eighteen conditions under which I will say I was wrong.

There is a state of the world that no existing monetary asset spans: administrative repression under intact infrastructure. Cheap universal verification is the first mechanism that could make an asset insensitive to the quality of its units without making it opaque. Whether that produces moneyness is an empirical question with three measurable answers, and the record publishes the instruments and the conditions under which each answer is no.
